In the old town of Cognac, called " the Old Cognac" sits the Castle that was in 1494 the birth place of Francis de Valois-Angoulême, who by the play of successions became in 1515 the French king of France Francis 1st. This king helped the Renaissance to develop in France and welcomed Leonardo di Vinci at the end of his life.

The castle is now housing in its walls Cognac Otard, a trading house, for more than the last 200 years. The streets of the Old Cognac are often named after traditional activities. While strolling, one notices very beautiful private houses but also the market hall of 19th century style shaped on design models by Baltard, the architect of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Among other elements of the heritage of the city are two museums to be discovered : the Museum of "Art et Histoire", a fine arts museum, and the Museum "des Arts de Cognac" (MACO). This museum, opened in 2004, invites us to "discover the great human, industrial and commercial adventure of the noblest spirit" with the support of films, sound environments, olfactory games and interactive experiments.

Next to the museum is the "Espace Découverte". This Discovery hall unveils a bit on the vineyards of cognac, most particularly "Grande Champagne" and "Petite Champagne" areas, the two most qualitative ’crus’ for cognacs and among the most beautiful ’terroirs’ in France with their Romanesque churches, traditional buildings, vineyards landscaping and sceneries along the Charente river.

Once left the hall, you have to leave the city itself and go to discover the heart of the vineyards, the "Grande Champagne" area also named the French Tuscany where the highest concentration of traditional of distilleries in the world is.
