Visit Sarlat, prehistoric caves, taste local gastronomy in the Black, Red, Green and White Périgord areas

Périgord region is located in the French department of Dordogne. It is divided into four parts. The Northen part, the closest of Charente, is the White Périgord (name after the calcareous nature of its ground). Further South are the Green Périgord and the Red Périgord. The oldest part and most famous is the Black Périgord where the old medieval city of Sarlat is located. There is no doubt that Périgord was largely occupied by our prehistoric ancestors, indeed this space is rich in vestiges : two of the most important are the Caves of Lascaux and the Fond de Gaume.

Middle Age vestiges are numerous in this area such as the famous city of Sarlat that was built with golden color local stones. The city developed around a large Benedictine abbey.

Périgord region is also well known for its gastronomy such as Confits, duck breasts, foie gras (goose liver), truffles, walnuts of Périgord and wines of Bergerac that may be tasted in a number of restaurants.
