In the middle of the 17th century, the royal harbour of Brouage silting up, the site of Rochefort is chosen by the prime Minister Colbert to build a new naval base and an arsenal. This site, located 15 km upstream of the mouth of the Charente river was well protected from the English threats of incursion. The site was also a good base for the defense of the Atlantic coast.

In the center of the arsenal, the Royal Manufacture of ropes, a 374 meters long splendid building, was built from 1666 to 1670 on oak beams plunged into the marshy ground. This building is a testimony of the industrial architecture of 17th century. Visiting the shipyard building the replica of the ship Hermione, originally built in Rochefort in the 18th century.

It is on this frigate, 44 meters long and more than 11 meters wide, that La Fayette left Rochefort in 1780 for his second trip to America to be part of the war of the American Independence.

Rochefort is also the birthplace of the French writer Pierre Loti. His house is an invitation to travelling and dreaming
