Tourism in Poitiers, the Capital city of Poitou Charentes and a medieval City of Art and History
The occupation of the place dates from prehistory. Then an important community developed there during the Gallo-Roman time thanks to a favorable natural framework.
Often invaded there after, the city built very imposing ramparts. Towards 9th C. Poitiers became a prosperous city and the center of Christianity under the influence of its first bishop : Saint Hilaire. This saint was at the origin of the large wave of evangelization which touched the city and its area. Today evidence remains from this period such the Romanesque cathedral "Notre Dame La Grande" or these narrow and picturesque medieval streets.
In the 16th C. Poitiers was already a city with many students. This can be porved by the Hotel Fumé, a 16th C. style building, which is still sheltering the University of Social Sciences and Arts. As a City of Art and History, Poitiers houses several museums as the Sainte Croix museum which has a significant archaeological department. Last, the city is surrounded by a countryside area which offers opportunities to relax walking or biking on paths and to practice sports such climbing on the famous site of Beauvoir or canoeing on the Clain river.
